LCS public computing clusters are located in Link Hall and Center for Science and Technology (CST) buidlings LCS public computing clusters are reserverd for LCS students, and students taking LCS classes only. Q. How do I check the schedules of the LCS public computing labs? A. Lab schedules will be posted on the door outside of each lab. You may also call the Dean's office for lab schedules.
Q. Which computing labs in Link hall are not LCS labs? A. Link110 and Link102 are ITS public computing clusters. They do not have the same software as LCS computing clusters do. They are also open to all students on campus. Q. How come I can't login at a LCS windows computer? A. LCS windows computers are restricted to students whose home college is LCS, and students who are currently taking a class in LCS. If you're a LCS student or currently taking a class in LCS and you cannot login. Please contact LCS support. Q. How do I access my home directory (H:\) drive from home? A. You can access your home directory remotely by running the SU Remote Access (SURA) tool. SURA can be downloaded from http://its.syr.edu/downloads. Install and run the tool, after you establish a VPN connection to the campus network, you can click the button Map Network Drive to access your home directory. Q. What is the storage quota on my H:\ drive? A. Students are allowed 1GB network storage on their H:\ drive. Q. Why do I need an ECS account? How do I request for one? A. You need an ECS account to login to the ECS UNIX systems, and also you need an ECS account to upload your homework on the web if your professor has an upload page.

If you're in a ECS Windows cluster, you can use the icon "Map ECS Homedir" on the desktop to map a network drive to your ECS home directory. Q. How do I reset my NetID password? A. A. MSDNAA stands for MSDN Academic Alliance. MSDNAA program allows students in the EECS department to legally download a variety of Microsoft software according to MSDNAA licenseing agreements. For a software listing, EECS students may login at https://msdn07.e-academy.com/elms/Security/Login.aspx?campus=syr_elecengcs. Can I ftp or telnet into my ECS home directory? A. Telnet access is disabled because it transmits passwords in cleartext. FTP to Helios.ecs.syr.edu is discouraged in favor of SFTP or SCP. FTP will also be limited to VPN connctions only in the near future. Q. Can I ftp or telnet into my AD home directory? A. Telnet access is also disabled because of security issues. You cannot ftp into your AD home directory. Please use the SURA tool. Q. How do I reset my Unix password? A. To reset your ECS Unix passwd, login to a Unix system and enter the command: passwd. Enter the "quota" command at the Unix prompt, % quota -v The output will look like this: Disk quotas for jsmith (uid 12345): Filesystem usage quota limit timeleft files quota limit timeleft /home/hd01 232708 307200 337920 8527 0 0 This example shows jsmith's current usage is 232MB(232708KB), he has a soft quota of 307MB(307200KB) and the hard limit is set at 337MB(337920KB). Q. What are the names of the Unix "timeshares" and how are they used? A. The LCS Unix timeshares are Nyx and Helios. You connect through Nyx or Helios to access the LCS Unix systems. You can also connect to the Elf cluster server nodes - Arwen, Elrond, Galadriel, Haldir, Legolas by using the qsh command.
